Skin Care and Your Health
The effects of UVA rays from the sun are well documented and most of us are aware of the need to use sunscreen protection whenever we are exposed to sunshine. During the summer months and on holidays this becomes second nature to us but we tend not to be as diligent during our normal lives unless there is a particularly hot period of weather.
Damaging effects of the sun’s rays can be avoided by installing sun awnings or shading in areas where you like to sit outside or entertain friends and family. That way you get the pleasure of spending time in the open air without being exposed to harmful rays. During the winter we are still exposed to the effects of the sun’s rays so using your awnings all year round will help protect you even when you might not think you need it.
Skin
80% of skin ageing is caused by sun exposure as UVA rays can penetrate deep into the layers of your skin and damage the collagen structure. This is the protein that holds skin together and prevents wrinkles. Once this is damaged it cannot regenerate itself.
The reason why a tan is brown is because of a pigment in your skin called melatonin which is released by your body as a protective measure for the epidermis level. Uneven distribution of melatonin is the cause of freckles and sunspots and these are signs of irreparable damage which can occur from a young age.
The occurrence of skin cancers has increased dramatically in recent years and does not just affect older people who may have had a lifetime of sun exposure. There are several types of skin cancer including basal cell, squamous cell and melanomas and the two former ones can often be treated quite successfully if early treatment is sought. However, melanomas can be the result of as little as two severe sun burns. Before the age of 18 can double your risk of developing this most deadly form of skin cancer. Be particularly vigilant with young children by using strong sunscreen protection and encouraging them to play out of the sun under patio awnings and sun shaded areas.
Eyes
Too much unfiltered sunlight can damage your eyes and lead to a range of conditions such as cataracts, lens damage, macular degeneration of the retina and even snow blindness. The effects of reflection off snow and water increases the damage so strong eye protection is recommended. Installing sun awnings over windows that are especially exposed to strong sunlight affords protection also to areas inside the house where you may like to sit beside a window throughout the year.
There is no doubt that the sight of the sun can give many of us a feel good factor and with some precautionary steps you can enjoy that whilst reducing the risk to your health.
